When you're the favorite animal ever created at the farm; your brother was named Champion Hampshire Barrow at the ‘23 North American. You have four sisters that are the heart of the program and your mother is “Jackie” 19-12—you have, SMOKE SIGNAL!
If SMOKE accomplishes half of what those who have seen him believe he can, he’ll quickly become a legend in the Hampshire breed.
I still remember the day we made the trip to Ada and seen Rumble. It only took seconds to determine he had some of the most intriguing pieces offered in the Hampshire breed. He wasn’t perfect by any means, but he had big parts, dimension, spread, and density like nothing else we’d ever seen. Not to mention, he was bred by the Hampshire legend himself, Joe Lancaster.
We always believed we had the perfect female to breed RUMBLE to. Up to this point, the main focus was all about building numbers of consistent looking females to strengthen the sow herd at SAVAGE.
We believed we had something after watching the growth, development, and finally ready to get the 19’s rolling. That famous litter of gilts was sired by Hands Down, one of the very best female making sire the breed has ever seen. The mother of the 19’s was the P.M. 72-7 daughter we acquired from the Earhart herd purchases. Although we only got that one litter from her, she left us 4 daughters to work with. The best looking one was always “Jackie” 19-12. Today, she could have many titles, but most famously recognized as the mother of Smoke Signal. Additionally, she’s responsible for over half the sow herd with direct daughters and granddaughters. 19-12 can not only make herd boars and sows, she produces champions in the show ring. She is the mother of the Champion Hampshire Gilt at the ‘24 Fall Expo sired by Lion Share for the Newcomb Family and most recently raised the Res. Purebred Hamp Barrow at ‘25 OYE for Ayden Johnson out of Ice Cold.
The other three 19’s: “Sister” 19-9 is the mother of our herd boar, Twisted Affair. Unfortunately, we lost the most extreme one 19-3 coming out of the crate, but not before she raised the Champion Hampshire & 4th Overall Gilt exhibited by Emma Garland at the ‘24 NJSA that went on to become the $28,000 high selling gilt of the year now known as “POCAHONTAS”. The 2025 EXPOSITION was time for 19-8 to shine. Her title is now being the mother of the Champion Hampshire Gilt exhibited by the Grinstead Family that went on to be the Top Selling Gilt that day. Hopefully, you can see why we’re so excited about the genetic punch on the female side that is supported within SMOKE SIGNAL.
He’s a boar that is beyond stout all over—his blades are broad, his skull shape is stout, he’s wide-eyed, and has as much dimension and skeleton width as you will find in ANY Hampshire boar we’ve seen in the breed. His proportions are unreal! He has awesome pastern strength, BIG BIG bones, and clean joints.
He may not be for everyone’s liking and that’s cool, but if you want people to see what you’re doing, I’d suggest sending up a SMOKE SIGNAL!
