I always try to answer the phone when I see it’s “Big Bob” Listen calling. Sure glad I did. All he said was, “There’s a project here you’d like, a true breeding piece. He’s probably not a show winner even in a class by himself, but he has big generating parts that you don’t find every day.” I responded with, “Fair enough,” and later that day he was headed to Savage. I honestly knew nothing about what we had bought—nothing about the pedigree—strictly bought him for the parts we were told he had. After Doin’ Business arrived and we started digging into things, that's when things became interesting…
Visually, you see a tall-shouldered, great-balanced Hampshire boar that has the absolute best angles, awesome feet, toe spread, and huge ankles. Doin’ Business has a fat hairy tail that sits high on his hip. A skull, eye, and ear that read like a true generator with dense, thick hair. His hip is really long and deep, square about his pin, and has the most enormous hind leg. So, what’s wrong with him? Nothing, really! He's just not the fleshy-built type, and I’d guess him to not be the highest performing for those concerned with that. I assure you he’ll never be the bigger outlined, taller kind that some desire. What he does offer is perfect proportions, build, unbelievable structural correctness, and the look of a true breeding hog as some of the old-school hog breeders would say. With all that said, the most intriguing part of Doin’ Business might be his pedigree.
We took a deep dive to identify the genetic profile of this guy. It was refreshing to see his pedigree read differently from anything we have used. Simply incredible to find all the influential boars and breeders it took to make Doin’ Business!
His sire, Chosen One, stands at Power Point Boar Stud. The most intriguing part of the tree is the female side with seven generations of production sows raised by Tom Knauer & Family. Here are a few of the influential Hampshire sires found in the genetic profile of Doin’ Business:
- Leading off the maternal side is the Bat-winning Hog College son of Iron Clad, which sired his mother.
- Supported by generators like Lethal, World Class, Grand Entrance, Unfinished Business, JL Struts 24-4, and Stop the Madness.
- You’ll also find JLM Carry On, JLM Colibob, Lifeline, Point Taken, No Debate, and the industry leader BOLN Point Maker (spotted multiple times on both sides).
- The famous BOLN Ninety-Nine, JLM Model T, JLM Augusta, JLM All She Wrote, and one of my all-time favorites, JLM Neat.
- Obviously anchored by the blood of DMF Reaching Out and JSE The Ritz.
We have total confidence with this one! EVERYONE that has seen him quickly sees the same value as us. He didn’t come with a hype video, wasn’t a top seller, didn’t win a pig show, but has all the intangibles to be a herd sire that can make all of the above!
He’ll get a chance to be stuck in some of the best Hampshire sows in the industry.
