When you're the farm’s favorite animal ever created; your brother was Champion Hampshire Barrow at the ‘23 North American, your four sisters are the heart of the herd, and your mother is “Jackie”—may we introduce you to the man himself, SMOKE SIGNAL!
If SMOKE accomplishes half of what those who have seen him believe he can, he’ll quickly become a legend in the breed. I still remember the day we made the trip to Ada to see Rumble. It took seconds to believe he was the most intriguing breeding piece in the Hampshire breed. Not perfect by any means, but he had big parts, dimension, spread, and density like nothing else we’d seen. Plus, he was put together by the Hampshire legend himself, Joe Lancaster.
We always thought we had the perfect female to mate him with. Up to this point, it was all about building the sow herd at Savage when we finally hit with what is now recognized as the 19’s. That litter was sired by Hands Down on our favorite sow acquired from the Earhart herd, 73-10. Although we only got one litter, she left us 4 great daughters to work with. The best one to look at was always “Jackie” 19-12. Today, she’s not only referred to as the mother of Smoke Signal, but has 7 other daughters injected into the herd. She most recently raised the Champion Hamp Gilt for the Newcomb Family at the ‘24 Fall Expo.
The other three 19’s: “Sister” 19-9 is the mother of our herd boar, Twisted Affair. Unfortunately, we lost 19-3, but not before she raised the Champion Hampshire & 4th Overall Gilt exhibited by Emma Garland at the ‘24 NJSA that was the $28,000 high seller. Not yet ringing a bell? There’s 19-8, who continues to make keeper daughters. Hopefully, this explains why we’re so excited about the genetic punch that comes with SMOKE SIGNAL.
A boar that is beyond stout all over—his blades are broad, his skull shape is stout, he’s wide-eyed, and has as much dimension and skeleton width as you will find. His proportions are unreal! He has awesome pattern strength, BIG bones, and clean joints. He may not be for everyone’s liking, but if you want people to see what you’re doing, send up a SMOKE SIGNAL!
Side note: His first litter produced the highly popular “PEACE PIPE”, which we recently sold privately to PBG. Check that thing out!
